They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If that's true, what does this one of my five-year old tell you?
She's tired? Bored? In deep thought? Nope, none of the above.
Let me break it down for you. After a detangling and co-wash session the other day, this moment happened (and I just happen to see it and recognize its awesomeness). Knowing her hair was still air drying, Mia jumped in our bed to watch K.C. Undercover on Netflix for the 519th time. She gently positioned her hand under her hair, propped it up with her arm and started watching the show.
Okay, still not sure where I'm going with this? What was she really doing you ask?!
Protecting. Her. Curls!!!
You see, this is a classic #blackgirlmagic pose to protect the new 'do! By any means necessary comes to mind. If the need arises, we'll even sleep in this pose to guarantee the pillow won't damage the hairstyle overnight.
So what does this mean for Mia?
1. She has been listening when I say 'don't mess up your hair' after our hours long, labor of love haircare sessions.
2. She is proud of her hair, which positivity impacts her self-confidence.
3. She is simply growing up!
How many of you can relate to this Curly Courtship moment? How far do you go to protect your hair? ❤️
I absolutely love this! My daughters and I have satin pillow cases and hair bonnets to protect our hair. I love to watch them go through the routines to protect their hair now as teenagers, they even look up different products and ingredients that are good for their hair! I love that Mia has caught this early!

Mia is so smart! I definitely remember trying to protect my styles when I was younger. I agree with Tiffany, satin pillow cases have saved my hair.

Wish I had the knowledge at her age. Now if I prop myself up against a pillow to watch a film, the bonnet goes on! silly I know
